A Clinical Psychologist trained in the UK has a broad range of mental health training and clinical experiences across the lifespan including learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental conditions and holds a doctoral level of training. They work collaboratively with clients which involves talking using a number of different models tailored to you and your family needs and, for younger children, playing and drawing. Together we work on thoughts, emotions and behaviour, your past, present and future until you reach the point where you are thriving in your life and not just surviving. A psychiatrist is trained as a medical doctor and is specialised in diagnosing and treating conditions where physical illness and mental ailments overlap with prescribed medication. The two specialisms overlap in some areas, and are frequently complementary to each other, but remain distinct practices with differing focuses on differing conditions. In the same way other health care works, something where, say... you might need a surgeon to pin your bones back together, but you also need a physical therapist to help you build the muscles back up and your GP to handle pain management. The specialisms overlap but cannot replace each other.
It important to state that clinical psychologists are more than just therapists, and use their scientist-practitioner training to address whole system problems at family, community, managerial and institutional level. They are trained to provide multidisciplinary leadership and innovation throughout the health and social care system.

Therapy and counselling are both valuable approaches to mental health support, but they have some key differences.
Therapy:
Therapy typically focuses on deeper-rooted issues and long-term behavioural patterns. If you're facing complex challenges that have been affecting your life for a while, therapy may be the right option. Therapists are trained to help you explore your thoughts, emotions, and past experiences to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and make positive changes for the future.Counselling:
Counselling, on the other hand, tends to address more immediate concerns and specific problems. If you're dealing with a particular issue, like relationship difficulties, career challenges, or grief, counselling can provide targeted guidance and practical strategies to help you cope and find solutions. Counsellors often offer support in a shorter-term and goal-oriented way. It's worth mentioning that these distinctions are not set in stone, and the terms therapy and counselling are sometimes used interchangeably. Ultimately, the most important thing is finding a professional who is the right fit for you and can provide the support you need, regardless of whether they identify as a therapist or counsellor.

The sessions involve talking and being curious about how things look and feel from your perspective as a young person, adult or older adult and if a younger person from your parents or carers’ as well. With support, we start to work out, a bit like detectives together, where the difficulties are coming from and why they are causing distress. We develop strategies together to support you thrive rather than survive. With children this can be done through play and drawing, alongside talking. We will set goals for treatment and regularly review these together. Sessions can last between thirty to fifty minutes depending what we talk about that week.
Online sessions will take place using Microsoft Teams, Zoom or GoogleMeets or via FaceTime.
In person sessions can be offered for all age groups.
For primary school aged children we will have sessions in person.
